Monthly Archives: October 2026

Things are bad all over for certain groups of professionals, & no one is talking about it.

A drawing of Jayne behind the screen of an old Macbook.

The year isn’t over yet, but it almost is, and I think it’s safe to say that, barring something extraordinarily wonderful happening before December 31, for so many of my colleagues, and myself, as Halloween looms:

2026 has been a nightmare.

If you work, or used to work, at the US State Department, USAID, the United Nations, any international aid agency or program, a university, or a nonprofit or NGO, you know what I’m talking about: you have watched friends laid off suddenly, you’ve watched friends have to yank their kids out of school and move suddenly either because of a job loss or because of a threat of a job loss – and maybe this has been your story as well – and, many of you, myself included, have seen job opportunities, whether permanent positions or contracts, dry up and disappear.

My LinkedIn feed is a sea of friends who not only worked in the aforementioned fields, but also in usability and accessibility design and assessments, all looking for work, all trying to stay positive, all trying to always sound like a great potential employee, never someone feeling frustated, desperate or depressed.

But I know. Because I’m in the same boat.

The threshold for a single person in the USA to have to file for taxes in 2026 is $16,100. I didn’t make a quarter of that in 2026. Most of my tiny income in 2026 came from a job that ended before February. If you had net earnings of $400 or more from self-employment (gig work, freelancing, or independent contracting), you have to file no matter how much you made – and I didn’t make even $400 from contracting in 2026.

If I were not married, I’m not sure what I would do.

I really hesitated in sharing any of this so publicly. But after realizing so many people are in a similar predicament and thinking they are all alone, I decided I’d come out and say: no, you’re not alone. It’s not just you. Things are bad for many of us. And it’s not really being talked about. Because no one has sympathy for out-of-work government workers or aid workers or university workers, despite our role, as donors for so many nonprofits, and our role as consumers, eating at your restaurants, buying cars, whatever. Will you miss us when you, at last, miss our money?

Added to this are nonprofits addressing hunger, homelessness, affordable housing, and other critical issues who already were too underfunded to keep up with the demands of years ago, and now have seen those demands double and triple, while funding has started to evaporate. No one is talking about how many more people are going without essentials, let alone the mental health strain on the professionals and volunteers trying to address these issues.

And it’s not just mission-based professionals that are facing unemployment and under-employment.

As you keep looking for work, as you fill out endless applications and look for networking opportunities and try to look for any work that could help you make ends make, I hope you all will consider taking on some new roles: as board members of local nonprofits, as members of city and county and even state government advisory committees, and maybe even running for local office. You have knowledge and leadership skills that have never been more needed than now. And you need to start using your influence on the grassroots level to start building awareness and changing attitudes about the work we think is vital to everyone on the planet.

I also ask that you come over to Reddit and show off your expertise. There’s at least one subreddit focused on your area of expertise. And given that AI is using what’s written at Reddit to define reality for so many people, your voice there is desperately needed. If you don’t know where to start, have a look at Reddit4Good. Or look at the subreddits I manage (as a volunteer).

I don’t know what’s going to happen in the coming months. I know so many of us are holding out hope that the November 2028 election in the USA will go a long way in the long process of restoring reason and sensibility to government and repairing the incredible amount of damage that’s been done, and we’re all hoping we’ll be able to be a part of that professionally. I share that hope – but am also trying to make contingency plans, and I hope my colleagues will too.

I hope you have family and friends and supporting you now, at the very least. I hope you can take some action to get the income you need and reduce your expenses. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing this isn’t personal, this isn’t about specific failure on your part. And I hope you can take some comfort as well in knowing you are NOT alone.

Take care.

As for me, I’m going to keep creating and and refining content for my web site and blog, as I continue to try, in my little, unfunded way to help nonprofits serve their clients and missions. And hoping things gets better.

On another note, I don’t have any blogs drafted and scheduled for the rest of 2026, so this may be the last you hear from me here on my blog until 2027.

A caution regarding IVHQ – in their own words.

A cartoonish hand is palm facing the viewer, as if to say stop.

Anyone who has read about me online for more than 10 minutes knows I’m not a big fan of voluntourism travel agencies. I know that it’s been largely colored by my background working in international and local aid and development, as well as my expertise in volunteer and community engagement. I’ve been open about why I’m not a fan of most voluntoursim, so I won’t repeat those reasons why here in this blog, but I’ve tagged all my many blogs on the subject here. And you’ll note as you read through these that I started off, decades ago, staunchly opposed to all voluntourism, and then, through outreach from ethical organizations with a very different focus than the voluntourism travel agencies, as well as volunteers who had participated in such, I gardually changed my mind about voluntourism being always wrong – and even ended up participating in a pay-to-volunteer-internationally program myself.

But one of those voluntourism travel agencies is REALLY angry with me. It’s called IVHQ. And this company is now threatening me because I have offered cautions in comments about the company on Reddit: I’ve told people that there are some very disturbing negative comments out there and they need to read them, and I’ve noted that a massive number of online reviews aren’t always an indication that a company is doing well, that it’s very easy to manufacture such reviews by AI and other means.

All true statements. All sincere cautions. I wish I could refer to them all, but IVHQ has pressured many Reddit moderators to take down any negative references to IVHQ. IVHQ, rather than address concerns, is bent on removing any negative comments about the company. Knowing that, and reading this email below, please think very, very carefully before booking your feel-good-look-I’m-volunteering-abroad! trip with IVHQ. You have to really wonder about a travel agency that is so threatened by an independent nonprofit consultant that they would resort to writing an email filled with inaccurate, misleading statements and threats:

Dear Jayne,

This is a formal notice that you must immediately cease publishing false
statements regarding International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ).

For several years, you have repeatedly posted negative claims about IVHQ
in online discussions, most recently on Reddit, asserting that:

  • IVHQ is a scam.
  • IVHQ’s reviews are fake.
  • There are many complaints about IVHQ.

These statements are entirely false and unsubstantiated:

  • IVHQ is a legitimate organization: More than 160,000 volunteers have
traveled with IVHQ since 2007. Based on verified volunteer reviews, Go
Overseas has named IVHQ its Top Volunteer Abroad Provider for six
    consecutive years.
  • Reviews are authentic: IVHQ does not write, purchase, or fabricate
reviews. Every review is submitted by a verified participant.
  • Claims are unverified: When asked to provide evidence of the
complaints you cited, you declined to do so. Furthermore, you confirmed
via email that you have never volunteered with IVHQ, and you did not
contact us regarding any concerns prior to publishing these claims.

Due to your conduct, Reddit moderators have already removed most of your
comments regarding IVHQ and banned you from communities including
r/volunteer and r/premed. Your statements mislead prospective volunteers
and harm the local partner organizations that rely on these programs.

We require that you immediately:

  1. Cease stating or implying that IVHQ is a scam, uses fake reviews, or
    is subject to widespread complaints.
  2. Refrain from making any further false claims about IVHQ online.
  3. Remove all existing false statements you have posted online.

Please reply to this email to confirm your compliance.

We are actively monitoring online platforms. If this behavior continues,
we will report all new posts as false information and harassment,
submitting this notice and prior correspondence as evidence. HQ Travel
Group and IVHQ reserve all legal rights and remedies.

Regards,

Sam Morrah

At least some of my comments about IVHQ, as well as some of the negative reviews I’ve referred to regarding IVHQ, can still be found online. I wish they all where still there but, as I said, IVHQ has, as it admits, pressured (I would call it bullied) moderators into taking the negative reviews and comments down. Again, you have to wonder about a company that is more focused on getting negative reviews, and references to such, taken down rather than addressing concerns.

A big thank you to colleagues who are also out there trying to ensure quality in international volunteering and fight against unethical voluntourism. Let’s keep up the pressure and not let people bully us into silence.

And if your voluntourism agency wants to be one of the “good guys”, I’d be happy to work with you to help you refine your program so it’s focused on local people as much as its focused on giving volunteers their Instagramable experience. I have very reasonable rates.

Join me on these online communities on Reddit.

My start on the Internet was not web sites or social media. It was online communities. Back in the 1990s, online communities and online conversations were the heart of the Internet.

I still participate in an online communities, primarily via Reddit. These are some that I’m facilitating and/or moderating and I would really like to have more participants on from colleagues – you all have so much expertise in at least one of these subjects, and so much to offer on these topics:

Volunteerism. Discuss & debate how volunteer engagement is community engagement & public relations, volunteerism philosophies, ethics & all aspects of supporting & managing volunteers.

Philanthropy. Discussions & articles about philanthropy (the giving of money or time to contribute to the welfare of others). Includes non-profit development/fundraising, donor cultivation, donor relations, giving campaigns, donor ethics, restricted donations, and all related topics, including volunteering.

ICT4D. ICT4D stands for Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) for Development. ICT4D refers to the application of ICT to economic development, humanitarian aid & development, & to causes that help empower a particular demographic or all people to address challenges, have greater access to education, protect their environment, etc. It is a term popularized by various United Nations initiatives. ICTs include artificial intelligence (AI).

Tech4Good. Tech4Impact (social, human), ICT4D. ICT Tech Ethics. Discuss examples resources & ideas for computers, applying apps & online tools to activities supporting causes that help humans & the environment. Discuss hackathons / hacks4good, apps4good, community tech centers, ethics regarding such, etc. Discuss how a nonprofit, NGO or community program you work or volunteer with is leveraging ICT – computers, smart phones, online communities, apps, special software, AI – in its work.

UNV. United Nations Volunteers (UNV) is a part of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This subreddit is for posts from people who have served or are serving as UNVs, people who want to serve, people who have worked or are working at UNV HQ, people researching UNV, & the latest UNV news. This subreddit is NOT an official United Nations group!

Pro Bono. There are plenty of subreddits to ask for free legal advice – this subreddit is NOT one of them. Instead, it is focused on how & why legal pros donate services (pro bono) & the value of such to society. It’s also a place to discuss pro bono ethics & how pro bono engagement can affect law school admissions.

Also see Reddit4Good, a list of subreddits focused on some aspect of volunteerism, community service, philanthropy, or otherwise doing good. It has sections that list subreddits where people can:

  • ask for/beg for money.
  • recruit volunteers / ask for help/participation for individuals, offer help to nonprofits or individuals, to participate in something “good”, etc.
  • learn about voluntourism (paying to volunteer somewhere that’s not where you live)
  • learn about specific, established programs, that “do good”.
  • learn about specific topics that could be leveraged for those looking to “do good”, like marine biology, public health, refugees, urban planning, etc.
  • post surveys and ask for participants.
  • view and participate in discussions about nonprofit philanthropy and about philanthropic approaches (these are NOT places to fundraise / NOT places to ask for money).

I update it at least twice a year.

Note: AI agents are using Reddit content as a source for its results (among other sources). This is because Reddit has been, for many years, providing human-written opinions by people who are not formally-affiliated with whatever they are talking about and real-world experiences. The text on Reddit often has the authentic feel that polished marketing text lacks. How long this will last, however, remains to be seen.

Here are other ways your nonprofit can leverage Reddit.

How To Ensure AI Agents Can Find Your Nonprofit.

a simplistic drawing of a wizard

The first results of a search on most web search engines now is from Artificial Intelligent agents – AI. And many younger people, when they want to ask a question about a nonprofit, don’t look at the nonprofit’s web site; instead, they ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity or some other AI agent for the information.

Sometimes a nonprofit or community group ranks well on a search of its name or some other phrase, like volunteer in Louisville, Kentucky, on Google, Bing or Duck Duck Go, but then barely gets mentioned in AI-generated answers, or the info provided by AI is outdated or even completely inaccurate.

Your nonprofit, NGO, or other community program needs to do an AI visibility check on various search engines and AI agents to see what your results are at least twice a year. You may find that you need to engage in some activities to improve the results that come from AI agents.

How do you do that? My new web page offers detailed, specific advice.

Artificial Intelligence – friend or foe for nonprofits?

Nonprofits, don’t cede creativity or curiosity or customer relations to AI, & keep your use of AI ethical.

Horrific experience with AI: a warning for others.

Nonprofits, you still need someone managing communications (& who knows how to do it)
