My Nonprofit Management Resources

There is an abundance of excellent, free resources online about just about every aspect of the management of nonprofit organizations, as well as other mission-based organizations. One of my favorite indices of such is the Free Management Library. It's my first stop when looking for anything at all related to some aspect of management.

In addition, most any public library, at least in the USA, can connect you with excellent books and databases, all for free, on every aspect of the management of nonprofit agencies. There are also libraries at universities that will allow you to use their resources if you aren't a student or faculty member, so long as you stay onsite.

There are also nonprofit management centers, support centers, and other associations that have libraries and workshops regarding every aspect of nonprofit management.

The majority of resources on my web site are focused on communications and outreach or on volunteer engagement for mission-based organizations. But I do have a few resources that are more generally-focused on nonprofit management, overall, or on fundraising. When it comes to these management resources, I tend to focus on the basics, because I see so many, many nonprofits and charities stumbling because of they aren't paying attention to the basics. And it's heart-breaking, because very decent organizations, even great ones, fold because they are too focused on finding something "innovative" instead of focusing on the fundamentals that would make them far more sustainable.

This is an index of my nonprofit management resources. I believe these give a good sense of what I'm like as a manager or consultant within an organization.

What’s the difference in for-profits & nonprofits?
The first step in forming a nonprofit isn't creating a logo. Or thinking about what accounting software you are going to use. Answering the questions I propose in this blog will create the business plan you MUST have to launch and succeed. It will also help gather the information needed by a new program for partnerships, community support and funding proposal.

Advice for Starting a Nonprofit or Non-Governmental Organization (NGO)
If you want to start a nonprofit or NGO, this site lists all of the places in various countries where you register your nonprofit business. The USA and many other countries do a very good job of walking you through the steps to formally launch a nonprofit business. Even if you hire a consultant to take you through the formation process, you need to understand that process yourself. if your country isn't listed here, you can bet that it's going to be similar to the countries listed here.

Survival Strategies for Nonprofits
These aren't general ideas for surviving a financial crisis. Rather, these are very specific steps for a nonprofit or NGO or charity to take to survive dire economic times. These are based on what I’ve experienced or observed at other organizations.

Signs that a nonprofit idea is doomed – a blog inspired by Anthony Bourdain
Reading Kitchen Confidential for the first time recently, specifically when Bourdain lists the signs of a restaurant that is doomed, got me thinking about what I’ve always considered the obvious signs of a nonprofit that’s in trouble and the wrong reasons to start a nonprofit. So I made a list of such.

Learning from a nonprofit’s failure
What I learned working for two nonprofits that failed - they no longer exist. This is your opportunity to learn from their missteps and not make the same mistakes - and, instead, to survive, even flourish.

Mission-Based Groups Need Use the Web to Show Accountability
A web site needs to be detailed and explicit about the results a nonprofit, NGO, charity, school or other mission-based organization is achieving. What else absolutely must be on that organization's web site? This page provides a list.

Accountability is a MUST for nonprofits, NGOs & charities
Another blog plea for nonprofits to demonstrate accountability online.

Growing misconceptions about the role of nonprofits in the USA
I’ve noticed a disturbing trend that greatly affects nonprofits in terms of how the public, the private sector and government think about them, and how the public, the private sector and government feel about their funding and support for such. There is a growing chorus of elected officials, corporate representatives and others who make comments about nonprofits that simply are NOT true. Here's more about those misconceptions and what nonprofits, as a sector, need to do to stop them.

Why your public meetings are so sparsely attended
Is your nonprofit, NGO, activist group, school or local government citizens board having trouble getting people to attend your public meetings? It's a complaint I hear constantly. And it's an issue that is easily addressed.

Creating a Speak-up Culture in the Workplace
An essential component of both running a quality volunteer engagement program and ensuring safety is creating an environment where volunteers, employees, consultants and clients all feel encouraged to speak out if they see anything that might be inappropriate. Although this is focused on volunteer engagement, this is a resource easily adapted when thinking about creating a speak-up culture for paid staff, consultants and clients as well.

Crowdfunding for Nonprofits, NGOs, Schools, Etc.: How To Do It Successfully
Attracting online donations is about cultivating and leveraging relationships - just like offline.

Don’t Just Ask for Money!
I'm overwhelmed with nonprofits who tell me only they want or need my money - but rarely tell me what work they are doing and why it matters. If you want more donations, you need to do more than beg.

Nonprofits & NGOs: you MUST give people a way to donate online
If you don't provide a way for people to donate online, you are turning money away!

Basic Fund-Raising for Small NGOs in the Developing World
The document is meant to provide very basic guidelines for small NGOs in the developing world regarding fund-raising and adhering to the basic principles of good governance, and to point to other resources. By small NGOs, I mean organizations that may have only one paid staff member, or are run entirely by volunteers; and may or may not have official recognition by the government. These organizations are extremely limited in their resources, and are often in unstable environments and/or serving profoundly poor populations. Certainly medium-sized NGOs could use it as well - organizations that may have two or three paid staff members.

The Pitfalls of Having a Program Sponsor
(and suggestions for mission-based organizations on how to avoid them)

For-profit companies, particularly large corporations, often sponsor specific programs at mission-based organizations (non-profit organizations, non-governmental organizations/NGOs, civil society, school, etc.), providing funding, donated staff time, and in-kind equipment and services to help launch and maintain a program. In most ways, this is a blessing for the mission-based organization. But there are often hidden costs that lead to frustrations for everyone involved. This is a list of some of those hidden costs, and ways they can be avoided.
