My husband came when USA immigration finished his paperwork (in early May 2009 -- indeed, it took about 90 days after we filed all paperwork for him to get his green card). We did all of the immigration paperwork ourselves, without an attorney. Yes, it's possible - it requires reading, reading, reading, and more reading, on both the US government's official web sites and the many places that offer free guidance, blogs from others who have done it, etc.
We found a place to an apartment to rent in Louisville, Kentucky, where we lived for most of the summer, with most of our things in storage. It was essential to already have a place to move into for a few months, in order to get settled and oriented.
We used ITO Movers.de to book with a mover to bring our things to the USA; they put a container outside our house in Sinzig for a few days, we filled it up and secured, and many weeks later, it arrived at US customs in Louisville. After US customs ransacked it, it arrived at our storage facility, B & L Storage on Poplar Level Road in Louisville.
We now live in Pacific Northwest. And we still travel. A lot.
