That means government offices and employees must use PDF\/A or HTML for\u00a0documents that are to be just viewed (but not edited), and ODF for sharing and collaborating on gov docs.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t meant that anyone has to give up Microsoft Office, but it does mean that, when creating a file in that office suite, it has to be saved in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/OpenDocument\" target=\"_blank\">an ODF format<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">.odt and .fodt for word processing (text) documents<br \/>\n.ods and .fods for spreadsheets<br \/>\n.odp and .fodp for presentations<br \/>\n.odb for databases<br \/>\n.odg and .fodg for graphics<br \/>\n.odf for formulae, mathematical equations<\/p>\n<p>If any of those employees are, like me, using\u00a0open-source office suites as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.libreoffice.org\" target=\"_blank\">LibreOffice<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openoffice.org\" target=\"_blank\">OpenOffice<\/a>, they can stop having to save files as .doc (Word), .ppt (PowerPoint) and .xls (Excel).<\/p>\n<p>From the ZDNet\u00a0article: &#8220;<span style=\"color: #252525;\">All office-suite programs, which\u00a0do not support ODF,\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"color: #005399;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.muktware.com\/2012\/10\/why-is-google-not-supporting-the-open-document-formats\/3384#.UTYr7U44lHE.twitter\">such as Google Docs<\/a><span style=\"color: #252525;\">, must add support for the standard. Without it, they will find themselves unable to compete for UK government business now.
