BUT, the survey apparently had wording that left out virtual volunteering, which makes me question the validity of these numbers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/volun.t05.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Here&#8217;s how BLS identified volunteering activities<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Coach, referee or supervise sports teams<\/li>\n<li>Tutor or teach<\/li>\n<li>Mentor youth<\/li>\n<li>Be an usher, greeter, or minister<\/li>\n<li>Collect, prepare, distribute or serve food<\/li>\n<li>Collect, make or distribute clothing, crafts or good other than food<\/li>\n<li>Fundraise or sell items to raise money<\/li>\n<li>Provide counseling, medical care, fire\/EMS or protective services<\/li>\n<li>Provide professional or management assistance, including serving on a board or committee<\/li>\n<li>Engage in music, performance, or other artistic activities<\/li>\n<li>Engage in general labor, supply transportation to people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s 2014 and <em><strong>this<\/strong><\/em> is how BLS defines volunteering activities?! In these definitions, where do <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coyotecommunications.com\/vvwiki\/examples.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">these typical virtual volunteering activities go<\/a>?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Managing an online discussion group<\/li>\n<li>Facilitating an online video chat\/event<\/li>\n<li>Translating a brochure from English to Spanish<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">researching subjects<\/span><\/li>\n<li>creating web pages (designing the pages or writing the content)<\/li>\n<li>editing or writing proposals, press releases, newsletter articles, video scripts, etc.<\/li>\n<li>developing curricula<\/li>\n<li>transcribing scanned documents<\/li>\n<li>designing a database<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">monitoring the news to look for specific subjects<\/span><\/li>\n<li>managing social media activities<\/li>\n<li>tagging photos and files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Heck, where do volunteering activities like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coyotecommunications.com\/volunteer\/onedaytech.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hackathons and wikipedia edit-a-thons<\/a> go in BLS&#8217;s volunteering activity categories?!<\/p>\n<p>How do we get the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bls.gov\/\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>\u00a0and others that research volunteering activities, like the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/\u200e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pew Research Center<\/a>, to change their survey methods so that virtual volunteering activities and new forms of volunteering, like hackathons, get included in research about volunteering? Perhaps someone at each organization should buy, and read,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.coyotebroad.com\/vvbook.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>The <\/strong><\/em><strong>Last<\/strong><em><strong> Virtual Volunteering Guidebook<\/strong><\/em><\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Also see <a href=\"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/2010\/12\/13\/needed-online-volunteering-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this blog of suggestions for research about virtual volunteering<\/a>, specifically.<\/p>\n<p><em>Update March 29, 2018<\/em>: Well done, Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), for redesigning its the General Social Survey (GSS) \u2013 which measures the official number of volunteers in Australia \u2013 to ALSO capture informal, online and spontaneous volunteering, not just traditional, face-to-face, onsite volunteering. <a href=\"https:\/\/probonoaustralia.com.au\/news\/2018\/03\/abs-looks-broaden-volunteering-census-data\/\">More about the change here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/volun.toc.htm\">as of 2015<\/a>, has the same old categories that exclude modern forms of volunteering.
