{"id":6332,"date":"2021-06-01T03:12:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-01T10:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/?p=6332"},"modified":"2021-05-25T15:23:45","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T22:23:45","slug":"microsoft-shutting-down-academic-search-and-related-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/2021\/06\/microsoft-shutting-down-academic-search-and-related-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft shutting down Academic Search and Related Services"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ballon-ride-rock-art.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"197\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ballon-ride-rock-art.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4325\"\/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lots of folks online are upset at the news that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/research\/project\/academic\/articles\/microsoft-academic-to-expand-horizons-with-community-driven-approach\/\">Microsoft is planning plan to shut down<\/a>&nbsp;its Microsoft Academic Search at the end of 2021. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infodocket.com\/2021\/05\/07\/sad-news-microsoft-is-shutting-down-microsoft-academic-and-related-services\/\">As one blogger put it<\/a>, &#8220;it provides\/provided better results than <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/\">Google Scholar<\/a> along with a number of features GS doesn\u2019t provide at all&#8221; and  has been &#8220;wonderful and powerful.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not that there aren&#8217;t other services &#8211; there are a number of other academic research search tools, many of them free. Some include bibliographic information\/direct links to open access articles as well as bibliographic info about paywalled materials. Others, provide material only about open access content. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"http:\/\/semanticscholar.com\/\">Semantic Scholar<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/core.ac.uk\/\">CORE<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scienceopen.com\/\">ScienceOpen<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.base-search.net\/\">BASE<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/opencitations.net\/querying\">Open Citations<\/a><\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aminer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Aminer<\/a><\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.crossref.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">CrossRef<\/a><\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dimensions.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dimensions<\/a><\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lens.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">lens.org<\/a><\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scopus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scopus<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/\">Academia.edu<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/faq#alerts\">alerting services from Semantic Scholar offers (free).<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I rely heavily on these services, both to find resources to add to my list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coyotecommunications.com\/vvwiki\/research.shtml\">virtual volunteering-related research<\/a> on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coyotecommunications.com\/vvwiki\/\">Virtual Volunteering Wiki<\/a> and to find out who might be quoting my book, <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coyotebroad.com\/vvbook.shtml\">The LAST Virtual Volunteering Guidebook<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, or any of <a href=\"https:\/\/open.academia.edu\/JayneCravens\">my other research or academic work<\/a>, in their own research. And without a university account, I don&#8217;t have access to most academic research journals &#8211; I can read only the summary of articles on the aforementioned services.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which of these services &#8211; or some other &#8211; is your favorite?
