{"id":470,"date":"2013-07-25T12:45:52","date_gmt":"2013-07-25T19:45:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/?p=470"},"modified":"2013-07-25T12:48:09","modified_gmt":"2013-07-25T19:48:09","slug":"vsf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/2013\/07\/vsf\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Student Foreign Service &#038; eInternship program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The USA State Department has launched the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/vsfs\/\">Virtual Student Foreign Service<\/a>\u00a0(VSFS) program.\u00a0On the site, employees and contractors post &#8220;challenges&#8221; (online tasks that need to be done), and student volunteer are invited to complete any they want to. Most tasks are designed for students to complete in two minutes to two hours.\u00a0No clearance is required to post &#8220;challenges,&#8221; according to the website.\u00a0Anyone with a State.gov or USAID.gov email address can sign up and post any short &#8220;challenge&#8221; that does not require a security clearance or any special permissions to complete.\u00a0Any student with a .edu email address can sign up to volunteer on the microtasks.<\/p>\n<p>The microvolunteering initiative grew out of\u00a0<strong>VSFS&#8217;s eInternship program<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 administered by the Bureau of Information Resource Management&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/m\/irm\/ediplomacy\/\">Office of eDiplomacy<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 which selects qualified undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students to partner with U.S. diplomatic posts overseas while the students work remotely on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.federalnewsradio.com\/697\/1988349\/State-Department-uses-eDiplomacy-for-outreach\">digital-based diplomacy projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While any U.S. student can volunteer to do short tasks through the micro volunteering platform, students must go through an application process to be selected for an eInternship. eInterns complete longer projects as part of their nine-month program.\u00a0Applications for the 2013-2014 school year eInternships opened July 2 on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usajobs.gov\/\">USAJobs.gov<\/a>, and VSFS will continue to accept submissions through July 20. Prospective applicants indicate projects they&#8217;re interested in and the selected eInterns complete projects assigned by Foreign Service Officers.\u00a0Selected students intern online for 5 to 10 hours per week through the fall and spring semesters.
