{"id":447,"date":"2013-06-27T07:37:14","date_gmt":"2013-06-27T14:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/?p=447"},"modified":"2013-06-27T07:37:14","modified_gmt":"2013-06-27T14:37:14","slug":"euinterns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/2013\/06\/euinterns\/","title":{"rendered":"EU agencies exploiting interns?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here we go again.<\/p>\n<p>I blog about the exploitation of unpaid interns a lot &#8211; most recently just a few days ago when <a href=\"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/2013\/06\/14\/nopayredux\/\">a\u00a0US Federal judge has ruled that against the company that made the movie \u201cThe Black Swan\u201d for not paying interns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now the spotlight is on <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/brussels-army-slave-trainees-escapes-123155558.html\">various EU offices and their involvement of interns<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The European Commission offers some 1,400 sought-after five-month traineeships a year with a 1,074 euros monthly salary that is top tier&#8230;\u00a0Yet the pay is well below the Belgian minimum wage requirement of 1,500 euros per month. Many other advertised positions offer monthly stipends of a few hundred euros and sometimes nothing at all.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Traineeships are supposed to provide training, but the line between that and actual employment is often blurred.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>EU agencies, you have two choices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pay trainees at least minimum wage and limit an intern to no more than four months in any internship at any organization, or,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>create a mission (and a mission statement) for your volunteer (unpaid staff) involvement and live it:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/volunteer\/mission.shtml\">state explicitly why your organization reserves certain tasks \/ assignments \/ roles for volunteers<\/a>\u00a0(unpaid staff, including unpaid interns), to guide employees and volunteers in how they think about volunteers, to guide current volunteers in thinking about their role and value at the organization, and to show potential volunteers the kind of culture they can expect at your organization regarding volunteers.
