{"id":3984,"date":"2018-04-02T03:18:39","date_gmt":"2018-04-02T10:18:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/?p=3984"},"modified":"2018-04-02T08:23:38","modified_gmt":"2018-04-02T15:23:38","slug":"onlinehate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/2018\/04\/onlinehate\/","title":{"rendered":"online communities, sexual harassment &#038; hate speech &#8211; UNESCO weighs in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/handstop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1240\" src=\"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/handstop.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"154\" height=\"203\" \/><\/a>During the 62 Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW62), UNESCO participated in an event exploring the role of online communities in relations to sexual harassment and hate speech.\u00a0The event took place on 13 March at the Permanent Mission of Finland\u00a0to the United Nations\u00a0in New York and other partners were Ministry of Social Affairs and Health in Finland, National Institute for Health and Welfare and Kenya Human Rights Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Interventions to combat the online hate speech were presented including a guidebook, <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.julkari.fi\/bitstream\/handle\/10024\/135990\/URN_ISBN_978-952-343-042-6.pdf?sequence=1\" target=\"_blank\">#WeWillNotBeSilent &#8211; What is hate speech and what it has got to do with gender?<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(PDF)<\/p>\n<p>This multi-stakeholder effort raises awareness of the (sexist) hate speech and offers guidance for youth on responding and preventing (sexist) hate speech online.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, 1 in 5 women using the Internet lives in countries where abuse of women is likely to go unpunished and 73 percent of women online have experienced some form of online violence.<\/p>\n<p>Gender equality is one of UNESCO\u2019s global priorities and well reflected in UNESCO\u2019s interventions. These include efforts to counter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/news\/unesco-launches-countering-online-hate-speech-publication\">online hate speech<\/a>, empowering women and girls to harness digital and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/themes\/media-and-information-literacy\">media literacy<\/a>\u00a0skills, promoting the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/world-media-trends-2017\/trends-safety-journalists\">safety of women journalists<\/a>\u00a0and gender parity in media.
