{"id":289,"date":"2012-04-04T14:24:00","date_gmt":"2012-04-04T14:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coyoteblog.posterous.com\/volunteer-management-once-more-with-meaning"},"modified":"2017-07-14T18:30:08","modified_gmt":"2017-07-15T01:30:08","slug":"volunteer-management-once-more-with-meaning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/coyotecommunications.com\/coyoteblog\/2012\/04\/volunteer-management-once-more-with-meaning\/","title":{"rendered":"Volunteer Management: Once More with Meaning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not the only one constantly harping that <a href=\"http:\/\/coyoteblog.posterous.com\/do-not-say-need-to-cut-costs-involve-voluntee\" target=\"_blank\">we need to stop talking about volunteers in terms of money saved<\/a> or in terms of &#8220;Hey, we&#8217;ve got all this work to do, let&#8217;s get some volunteers to do it&#8221; &#8211; and, instead, start talking about the true <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coyotecommunications.com\/volunteer\/value.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">value of Volunteers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a fantastic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nonprofitquarterly.org\/management\/1029-volunteer-management-once-more-with-meaning.html\" target=\"_blank\">article from 2008 by Jennifer Woodill for the Nonprofit Quarterly<\/a> that echoes what a small but growing number of managers, researchers and volunteerism advocates have been saying &#8211; <strong>there are much better reasons to involve volunteers than <em>we don&#8217;t have to pay them!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s volunteer managers that are the biggest obstacle in changing this mentality &#8211; it&#8217;s donors, particularly from the corporate sector, as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/coyoteblog.posterous.com\/un-volunteers-ifrc-ilo-others-make-huge-misst\" target=\"_blank\">big organizations like the United Nations Volunteers program and John Hopkins University<\/a>, which just cannot let go of the idea of volunteers being great primarily becaues they mean not having to pay employees or consultants to do work.<\/p>\n<p>Way to go, Jennifer!<\/p>\n<p>Also see:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/coyoteblog.posterous.com\/do-not-say-need-to-cut-costs-involve-voluntee\">Do NOT say &#8220;Need to Cut Costs?
