internet discussion groups
for volunteer managers/service leaders

This information was last updated on June 5, 2000

These are USENET newsgroups, e-mail-based discussion groups, web-based bulletin boards and updates via e-mail for and by volunteer managers/service leaders. These are great places to interact with other volunteer/service managers of various types of organizations, get suggestions and feedback, and ask questions.

The Virtual Volunteering Project does not sponsor of most of these groups, however, our Project Manager does participate in many of these groups!

Mailing Lists (Internet discussions via e-mail)

With mailing lists, e-mail messages go to a central point and are then "reflected" automatically back to all who subscribe to the list. It is free to subscribe to a mailing list. However, note that, when you subscribe to any of these lists, the address for subscriptions is DIFFERENT than the address for posting comments and questions.

Most of these lists provide you with the option of receiving messages in "digest" mode, which means you receive all of the messages for a list in one e-mail. If you are subscribing to more than one list, you will probably want to enable this option. Check the "welcome" message you receive after you subscribe to a particular list for directions on how to receive the in digest mode.

Newsgroups

Also called USENET groups, newsgroups are Internet discussions, each dedicated to a particular topic. Newsgroups can be accessed via a news reader or via many Web browsers, such as Netscape. Messages are "posted" to the newsgroup, for everyone who subscribes to the newsgroup to see (it is free to subscribe to most newsgroups). If you click on a group below to which your Internet Service Provider (ISP) does not subscribe to, you will get a "file not found" error; contact your ISP if you think it should provide access to a particular newsgroup; or, access the group via remarq.com/ or dejanews.com.

Bulletin Boards and Chats

These discussions are done via a Web site, often one sponsored by a commercial entity. It's usually free to join such groups, but by joining you could be adding your name to a commercial mailing list; always read the "Terms of Service" and "Privacy Policy" before joining such a group. Like newsgroups, messages are "posted" to the bulletin board or chat, for everyone who subscribes to the group to see and respond to.

You can find more specific Internet discussion groups, such as ones dealing only with a particular geographic area or a particular program (such as the Peace Corps) via these search engines:

If you would like to add an online volunteer management resource to this list, please e-mail us. Include your name, e-mail address, Web address (if applicable) and the name of the organization you represent or with whom you are affiliated. We will take your suggestion into consideration.
